Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has proposed adopting Hausa as the medium of instruction in primary and secondary schools across Northern Nigeria.

He believes this approach would tackle the region's high rate of out-of-school children and encourage greater enrolment in formal education.

Speaking during the National Literary Colloquium held in Minna to celebrate the 60th anniversary of BM Dzukogi, founder of the Hilltop Arts Foundation, Bago emphasized the role of language in education.

He urged northern governors to review the educational curriculum, proposing that English should be taught only as a subject rather than the primary medium of instruction.

He announced plans to merge some schools in Niger State to include vocational training, fostering practical skills alongside academic learning.

The governor called on his peers in the northern region to adopt similar measures, aiming to create a more inclusive and effective educational system while preserving local language and culture.
