President Bola Tinubu has initiated a cabinet reshuffle, leading to the dissolution of the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.
Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesman, announced these changes on Wednesday.
In a shift towards regional governance, a new Ministry of Regional Development will now oversee various regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission and others across the North West, South West, and North East. The National Sports Commission will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Ministry of Sports.
Onanuga also revealed the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. The future roles of Abubakar Momoh, the former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, and John Enoh, the former Sports Minister, remain uncertain.
Further details regarding the merged ministry are pending, particularly whether Hannatu Musawa, the Culture Minister, or Lola Ade-John, the Tourism Minister, will lead the new entity.
Tinubu has faced mounting pressure for this cabinet reshuffle, with Onanuga hinting at its inevitability in recent announcements.
He emphasized the need for ministers to actively communicate the administration's achievements, as there is a perception that the government is not doing enough.
Onanuga urged ministers to be more visible in the media and advocate for their ministries’ contributions.
