Niger State: Fraud caused delay in payment of September salaries - Commissioner

The Niger State Government has uncovered a scam involving forged political appointment letters, resulting in the employment of fraudulent officials who are now being paid through the government payroll. This revelation, according to the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, has delayed the payment of September salaries for genuine appointees.

To address the issue, the government has mandated a screening exercise for all political appointees to weed out the fraudulent ones. Mamman emphasized that only those who pass the screening will receive their salaries. She revealed that the government issued legitimate appointment letters to approximately 4,000 political appointees across various positions, including Commissioners, Special Advisers, and Special Assistants.

The Commissioner lamented the financial burden this situation has placed on the state, with the salary portfolio now exceeding N600 million. She stressed the need to identify genuine appointees to reduce the state's expenses and allocate funds to other critical areas.
