2nd Africa Military Games opened in Abuja
President Bola Tinubu has called for unity among African militaries to address the continent’s pressing security and stability challenges. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, he delivered this message during the opening of the second Africa Military Games at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” aims to foster camaraderie, collaboration, and resilience among armed forces across the continent.
The Games, first initiated over 20 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya, have been revived under the leadership of Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General Maikano Abdullahi. This year, 1,625 athletes and officials from across Africa are participating.

Unity in Security: Tinubu emphasized that Africa's security challenges require collective efforts, stating that "no single nation can tackle its security challenges alone." He urged militaries to deepen partnerships and foster unity to build a safer and stronger Africa.Sports and Discipline: The President noted that sports promote physical fitness, discipline, and resilience—qualities essential for military personnel to address diverse security issues effectively.
Tributes and Recognition: Tinubu commended the leadership of the Defence Chief and OSMA President for their roles in organizing the games, highlighting the vision of unity, solidarity, and showcasing Africa’s rich military heritage.
The ceremony featured performances, the symbolic lighting of the game torch, and other traditional rituals symbolizing unity and sportsmanship. High-profile attendees included the Speaker of the House of Representatives (represented), defense ministers, senior military officials, and heads of delegations from participating nations.
The Africa Military Games provide a unique platform for strengthening cooperation and solidarity among the continent’s armed forces while showcasing athletic prowess and promoting a shared vision of security and unity.
