Bandits attacked: 7 people killed, 50 bags of Maize and Truck burnt in Bangi, Niger State
This report highlights the ongoing insecurity and violence affecting communities in Niger State, Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like
Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area (LGA). The killing of seven farmers and the destruction of their truck and harvested maize underscores the challenges farmers face in maintaining their livelihoods amidst banditry and violence.
According to an eye witnessed, the victims went to their farm to harvest their maize crops but ended up losing their lives as the bandits ambushed them, opened fire for all of them and later set bags of maize crops and the truck that supposed to carried this crops from the farm ablaze.
In addition to the tragic loss of lives, the economic impact on these communities is severe, as such incidents discourage farming and disrupt food supply chains.
The killing of Mallam Danjuma, a residence of Kontagora, even after a ransom payment of 20 millions Naira, further illustrates the lawlessness in some regions and the inefficacy of ransom negotiations to ensure victims' safety.
The statement by SP Wasiu Abiodun of the Niger State Police Command acknowledges the situation and suggests that security forces are taking action. However, the persistence of such incidents raises questions about the adequacy of these measures and the broader need for sustainable strategies to address rural insecurity, including community engagement, intelligence sharing, and increased security presence in vulnerable areas.
This situation calls for urgent attention to protect lives, support affected families, and restore confidence in farming and rural activities, which are vital to local and national food security.
