Bandits: Heavy Fighting took place in Gatawa town, as soldiers and vigilantes resisted attacked
The ongoing gun battle in Gatawa town, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has intensified since it started early on Tuesday, as soldiers, local hunters, and bandits led by the notorious Bello Turji engage in fierce combat. The confrontation erupted around 6 a.m. when bandits attempted to attack the town but were repelled by the combined forces of the military and local vigilantes. As of 2:45 p.m., the battle remains unresolved, with both sides exchanging gunfire and no movement allowed in or out of the town.
Local sources suggest that Turji may be leading the assault, further escalating tensions. The battle is described as one of the fiercest the town has experienced, with residents hoping for a quick military victory. However, concerns are growing about potential reinforcements for the bandits and the possibility of Turji being among those killed.
So far, one person has been reported killed and another kidnapped by the bandits, though both victims were not part of the military or local defence forces. The bandits also set fire to an army vehicle that got stuck in the mud, while several of their own were reported killed. Neighbouring villages have confirmed seeing bandits transporting the bodies of their fallen comrades back to their hideouts.
Bello Turji, believed to be hiding in a forest in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, has been a notorious figure behind several attacks across Sokoto and Zamfara states. His criminal operations have caused widespread fear in the region, especially as the battle in Gatawa continues to bring uncertainty to local communities.
