#EndBadGovernanceprotest, court struck out minor charges

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out the treason charges against minors involved in the August #EndBadGovernance protest, following a request by the Federal Government. The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) moved to discontinue the case, citing constitutional provisions, and the court granted the request, dismissing the charges. The AGF's legal representative, Mohammed Abubakar, also requested that proceedings be conducted without the minors' presence in the courtroom, which was accepted by the court.

This decision followed the earlier arraignment of 114 protesters, including minors, with the court granting them bail of N10 million each, pending the continuation of the trial in January 2025. Some defendants, due to health issues, were excused from the proceedings, and the court allowed them to be re-arraigned once they recovered. The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of minors, and President Bola Tinubu had directed the AGF to ensure their release.
