 The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish two critical institutions aimed at youth development: the National Youth Development Bank and a Youth Data Bank. These initiatives were revealed by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, during a Stakeholders Roundtable on Northern Youth Development in Abuja.

Key Highlights:

  1. Purpose of the Banks:

    • The National Youth Development Bank is intended to provide financial support to young Nigerians.
    • The Youth Data Bank will focus on gathering and managing information about youth demographics, aiding in targeted developmental initiatives.

  2. Youth Development Strategy:

    • The administration has rolled out a comprehensive youth development strategy spanning multiple sectors, including education, agriculture, technology, and housing.
    • Notable programs include:
      • Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme for technical skill development.
      • Skill-Up Artisans Programme (SUPA) and the National Youth Talent Export Programme (NATEP) to enhance creative and digital economy participation.
      • Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for higher education access.
      • Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) for fostering digital entrepreneurship.

  3. Regional Development and Security:

    • President Tinubu emphasized that Northern Nigeria’s development is integral to the nation’s overall progress, highlighting its agricultural potential.
    • Measures to address regional security include:
      • Strengthening community policing.
      • Rehabilitating displaced persons.
      • Tackling cross-border issues such as smuggling and insurgency.

  4. Future Outlook:

    • The administration aims to prepare Nigeria for its projected population growth, with an estimated three-quarters of citizens under 21 by 2050.
    • Emphasis was placed on turning Nigeria’s demographic challenge into a developmental advantage through strategic investments in youth education and empowerment.

  5. Youth as the Present and Future:

    • Tinubu and other stakeholders, including Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III of Sokoto, reiterated the importance of involving youths in policymaking and nation-building.
    • The Sultan stressed the critical role of education as a foundational tool for societal progress, advocating for increased investment in educating children.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to address economic and social challenges, providing Nigerian youths with tools to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Over 20 people kidnapped along Mariga -Kontagora - speaker

  Over 20 passengers have reportedly been kidnapped on the Mariga-Kontagora road in Niger State, according to Barrister Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly.  The incident occurred when bandits blocked the road between Baban-Lamba and Beri. Sarkin-Daji expressed concern about the military's dismissal of claims regarding bandit activities near military training grounds in Kontagora,  noting that victims previously kidnapped had reported being held in a forest close to the Kontagora Army Barracks.  He urged the military to take the feedback from affected communities seriously and work to eliminate the bandits operating in the area.  The Speaker emphasized that the military's role is to protect citizens, calling on federal authorities to address the situation effectively.
