The ongoing infrastructural development under Governor Umar Bago's administration in Niger State is indeed commendable. The focus on township road construction across the 25 local government areas, the establishment of the IBBUL teaching hospital, the construction of a 5-star hotel that had long been abandoned, and the introduction of street lighting systems in Minna, the state capital, are all significant steps toward transforming the state.
However, it is equally important to draw attention to the dire condition of the federal roads that traverse the state. Niger State, due to its strategic position as the gateway between the northern and southern regions of Nigeria, is critical for the nation's connectivity. Unfortunately, many of these important federal roads remain in a deplorable state, despite the repeated appeals from both the current and previous state administrations.
Key federal roads that urgently require federal intervention include:
- Mokwa to Makera to Tegina to Kaduna
- Mokwa to Makera to Kontagora
- Kontagora to Bangi to Bena
- Kontagora to Rijau to Zuru
- Minna to Tegina to Kontagora
- Bida to Zungeru
- Minna to Suleja
- Minna to Sarkin Pawa to Kaduna
Given the strategic importance of these roads, it is imperative that the federal government prioritizes their rehabilitation. We call on the federal government to take immediate action to address the neglect of these critical roads. Additionally, we urge our representatives in the National Assembly to advocate for the urgent repair and upgrade of these roads with the Federal Ministry of Works. With collective efforts, Niger State can achieve a balanced and sustainable development that supports both state and national growth.
