Some Judges are giving Judiciary bad name - CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, recently addressed concerns about the reputation of the judiciary, noting that some judges are tarnishing the institution’s image. Her remarks were made during a public discourse on "Ethics, Morality and The Law" organized by the Movement for Islamic Culture and Awareness (MICA), marking its 30th anniversary.

Justice Kekere-Ekun acknowledged that while the judiciary is blessed with hardworking, knowledgeable, and upright judges, a few judges are contributing to negative perceptions, particularly through controversial rulings in high-profile cases, such as those witnessed in Kano and Rivers states, where political battles are intense.

She emphasized the importance of ethics and morality in the legal profession, pointing out that the public often assesses the judiciary through the lens of its ethical conduct. She reminded judges of their accountability to both themselves and to God, urging them to maintain high moral standards. The CJN also stressed the role of lawyers in balancing the law with ethical considerations, noting that their actions greatly influence public trust in the judiciary.

Drawing on the influence of the Abrahamic faiths, which emphasize righteousness, she highlighted that both Islam and Christianity advocate for uprightness in all areas, including the legal system. In conclusion, she reaffirmed that while challenges exist, the majority of judges remain committed to upholding justice and integrity.
