Republic of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, officially cease to be Ecowas Members on January 29, 2025 - Ecowas
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the regional bloc, marking a significant geopolitical shift in West Africa.
The decision was announced by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray at the conclusion of the 66th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.
The three countries will officially cease to be members of ECOWAS on January 29, 2025, as per Article 91 of the revised ECOWAS treaty.
ECOWAS also praised Nigeria’s leadership under President Tinubu, noting the country’s full payment of its community levy for 2023 and substantial contributions for 2024.
The withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso could reshape regional alliances and test ECOWAS’s ability to maintain its vision of economic integration and collective security amidst political instability in the region.
However, ECOWAS remains open to reconciliation and dialogue with the departing nations during the transitional period.
