Tax Reformed Bills, How a southern Rep Member approached me to support the bill- Kano Rep. Member

Dr. Mustapha Ghali, representing Gaya, Ajingi, and Albasu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has expressed opposition to the proposed tax reform bills, emphasizing that Nigeria is not yet prepared for their implementation. Speaking to journalists in Kano, he highlighted the lack of a conducive environment and necessary development as key reasons for his stance.

Dr. Ghali revealed that a fellow lawmaker from the South had attempted to lobby him to support the bills, citing potential benefits for Kano and Lagos. However, he declined, advocating for equitable benefits for neighboring northern states such as Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi. He criticized the perceived regional bias and called for unity among northern lawmakers to resist the move.

Drawing comparisons with countries like England, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, where tax reforms have succeeded, Dr. Ghali pointed out that those governments had already established robust social amenities and economic opportunities before implementing similar policies. He urged the Nigerian government to prioritize development, employment, and essential services before considering tax reforms.

Dr. Ghali, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), also highlighted his legislative contributions, including sponsoring 10 bills. Notably, he mentioned the bill for establishing a Federal Medical College in Gaya, which has passed the third reading and awaits Senate and Presidential approval. He stressed that the proposed college would address the shortage of medical personnel and enhance healthcare services in the region.

The lawmaker concluded by appealing to northern stakeholders to unite against the tax reform bills until the country is adequately prepared for their implementation.
