Temper with LGA Funds and Go to Jail- AGF Warns councils officials

Minister of Justice & AGF

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has issued a stern warning to local government officials against tampering with funds following the Supreme Court's landmark judgment affirming local government financial autonomy. Speaking in Abuja during a conference for judiciary correspondents, Fagbemi emphasized that any violations of the ruling would be met with strict legal consequences, including imprisonment.

Fagbemi highlighted that governance at the grassroots level has suffered due to past neglect but assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is committed to rectifying these issues.

The Supreme Court's decision mandates the direct payment of local government allocations to their accounts, eliminating the practice of governors controlling these funds.

The AGF urged local government officials to use their resources to improve essential infrastructure like roads, schools, and hospitals.

He reminded them that while governors enjoy constitutional immunity, local government officials do not, leaving them vulnerable to prosecution if they misuse funds.

This ruling is expected to restore autonomy and development to local governments, ensuring that resources directly benefit grassroots communities.
