Unqualified Teachers to be flush out - Education Commissioner

The Niger State Government has announced plans to remove unqualified teachers from classrooms to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. It has also directed retired teachers residing in school staff quarters to vacate their accommodations to make room for newly recruited teachers.

Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, the Commissioner for Basic Education, made these remarks during the Annual General Meeting of the Bida Old Students Association (BOSA) at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre in Minna, the state capital.

She emphasized the state's commitment to a rigorous screening process for teachers, noting that training and retraining programs would be organized. However, teachers deemed "untrainable" will be dismissed. Dr. Mohammed also highlighted the state’s intent to retain teachers recruited through Parent-Teacher Associations after the screening process. She added that the National Career Path Policy would be reintroduced to support professional growth among teachers.

"The state will not allow unqualified individuals to enter the teaching profession. Teachers must undergo thorough screening. Those who are not trainable will be removed to ensure our children receive quality education," she said.

During the event, Major General Abdulmalik Halidu Giwa (retired), National President of BOSA, spoke about the interventions by alumni to address challenges at Government College, Bida, but acknowledged that more efforts were needed to resolve the college's infrastructure issues.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Alhaji Muhammadu Agwai, expressed concern over the poor state of the college and called on members for support to prevent its total collapse.

The meeting also included an awards ceremony, honoring distinguished alumni such as former military head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Kano State military governor Colonel Sani Bello, and 15 other notable individuals.
