Niger State Deputy Governor reportedly considering resignation.

Image
The tension between Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and his deputy, Yakubu Garba, has escalated amid rumors that Garba is contemplating resignation. Garba’s recent move from his official residence near the Justice Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre has further fueled speculation of a fallout between the two leaders.  The rift began soon after they assumed office in May 2023, according to the source. Some insiders attribute the conflict to a leaked recording of a private conversation between the deputy governor and other government officials, in which Garba allegedly criticized the governor’s actions.  The recording reportedly reached the governor and sparked his dissatisfaction. The rift between the governor and his deputy further deepened when the governor rejected the deputy's preferred consensus Chairman candidate from his local government area.

Many Nigerian universities are bestowing honors on individuals who lack both proper education and good character - Professor Jega

Prof. Attahiru Jega At the 14th Convocation Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Attahiru Jega, Pro-Chancellor of Usumanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, criticized Nigerian universities for awarding degrees to individuals he described as "illiterates" and lacking in worthy character.  He stressed that graduates should be found worthy both in learning and character, but lamented that this ideal has declined in many institutions.  According to Jega, some graduates either lack true academic knowledge, character, or both. He emphasized that convocation ceremonies should inspire reflection on academic and societal standards. Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, delivered the keynote at the event.
