At the 14th Convocation Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Attahiru Jega, Pro-Chancellor of Usumanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, criticized Nigerian universities for awarding degrees to individuals he described as "illiterates" and lacking in worthy character.
He stressed that graduates should be found worthy both in learning and character, but lamented that this ideal has declined in many institutions.
According to Jega, some graduates either lack true academic knowledge, character, or both. He emphasized that convocation ceremonies should inspire reflection on academic and societal standards. Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, delivered the keynote at the event.
