Makera to Kontagora road blocks, as Babba Rami bridge Collapsed
Kontagora to Makera road in Niger State is block, following the collapse of the Babban Rami Bridge, an incident that has disrupted traffic on the route.
As it stands, there is no passable road between Kontagora and Makera.
This road is one of the worst in the country, as it takes 5 to 6 hours for a car to travel to Kontagora—a distance of less than 100 km.
The road, which is a federal government road, has remained in its current deplorable condition for the past 10 years.
Although the rehabilitation of this road was said to be part of the larger Makera–Kontagora–Yauri–Koko–Jega–Sokoto road project awarded by the federal government, only the Kontagora to Sokoto section has been completed.
The Makera to Kontagora stretch just under 100 km was abandoned, leaving residents of this area in a difficult situation, as the road remains a nightmare for travelers.
This road serves approximately four Nigerian states Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara as well as the Niger Republic.
It also functions as a vital link between these northern states and the southwestern region of the country.
Despite its deteriorated condition, the route remains heavily used by both heavy-duty trucks and smaller vehicles due to its shorter distance and lack of viable alternatives, thereby resulting to frequent accidents.
Given its strategic importance, both the federal and state governments should prioritize the completion of the Makera to Kontagora rehabilitation project by urgently mobilizing contractors to return to the site.
