Breaking: Mathematics no longer a compulsory subject for Arts and humanities students - FG

Image
Nigerian senior secondary school students pursuing arts and humanities will no longer be required to have a credit in Mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) as a prerequisite for university and polytechnic admission, according to the Federal Ministry of Education's announcement on Tuesday. For years, students seeking admission in the arts and humanities have been mandated to present five credit passes, including Mathematics and English Language, just like their counterparts in the sciences and social sciences. The updated National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions aim to remove entry barriers while upholding academic standards. The new framework applies to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Academies across the country, as outlined below: Universities : A minimum of five (5) credit passe...

Security Alert: Bandit Activities in Mariga, Kontagora and Rijau, LGAs and Environs

Image
Recent intelligence indicates that armed bandits have been sighted in Mariga Local Government Area  (LGA), Niger State. Reports confirm the presence of these criminal elements in the Kumbashi and Yabawa communities since yesterday . In addition, sightings have been reported at Rijiyar Nagwamatse , a location a few kilometers from Kontagora yesterday .  While troops had previously repelled an attempted incursion by the bandits near Warari community on their route to Rijau two days ago, new developments suggest that the bandits are currently regrouping in Yabawa , reportedly assembling over 300 motorcycles in preparation for a possible reprisal attack following their earlier defeat. Given these developments, members of the public, especially travelers along the Tegina–Kontagora road , are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution , limit non-essential travel , and stay alert for updates from security agencies.

Student Loan: NELFUND Reopens Student Verification Portal for 48 Hours; Names 203 Defaulting Institutions

Image
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that its student verification portal will be reopened for 48 hours to allow tertiary institutions that have yet to complete the verification of their students to do so. In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the portal will be accessible from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025, to 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 . This limited extension aims to ensure that all eligible students are properly verified by their respective institutions as part of the ongoing 2024/2025 NELFUND loan application process . NELFUND urged institutions to take full advantage of this final opportunity , warning that failure to complete the verification process within the specified period will disqualify them from participating in the current loan cycle . The student verification portal had initially closed on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 , following the end of the second round of applications. In...

Banditry: Will asking people to sell their cattle in Mariga LGA help resolve the issue of banditry in the area?

Image
Although we can’t confirm the accuracy of the claim, it was reported that during the so-called stakeholders’ meeting in Kontagora, a politician allegedly instructed district and village heads in Zone C to sell their cattle as a way to curb banditry in the area.   But will selling cattle really solve the problem? Definitely not. Even in the states where banditry initially started, such instructions were never given to citizens. Besides, what are these villagers expected to do with the proceeds from such sales—assuming there are even any cattle left? The reality, which the adviser seems to have overlooked, is that there are very few cattle remaining in the area.  Most have already been stolen by the bandits long ago. Yet the attacks persist. These bandits now come almost every four days without resistance, using this area as a transit route to other locations.  So, with or without cattle, they will continue to pass through communities like Kotonkoro, Kumbashi, Maburya Kakih...

2026: 98% of Nigerian Workers Set for PAYE Tax Exemption"

Image
Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, has announced that approximately 98% of Nigerian workers will no longer pay the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) tax once new tax reforms come into effect in January 2026. Speaking at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES31) in Abuja, Oyedele explained that the reforms aim to protect low-income earners and those near the poverty line, while creating a more equitable and efficient tax system. “The more inequality you create, the more time bombs you have,” he said. “These reforms are meant to improve governance in revenue collection, enhance accountability, and ensure tax revenues are properly utilized.” Part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader fiscal policy agenda, the comprehensive tax reforms are also expected to improve Nigeria’s credit rating, reduce borrowing costs for both government and businesses, and attract private-sector investment. Oyedele revealed that his role in driving these changes has...
