Industrialist and philanthropist Aliko Dangote has introduced a groundbreaking ₦100 billion annual education support programme designed to transform Nigeria’s education sector and assist students facing financial challenges.

The initiative was unveiled at an event attended by the Vice President, state governors, ministers, traditional rulers, senators, and other dignitaries.

Dangote described education as the backbone of national progress, stressing that no country can advance beyond the quality of education it offers its young people. He emphasized that financial hardship must not be allowed to hinder the dreams of Nigerian youths.

Costing an estimated ₦1 trillion over ten years, the programme will begin in January 2026. It will support 45,000 new beneficiaries each year and reach 155,000 students by the fourth year. Over a decade, more than 1.3 million students are expected to benefit.

The initiative has four key components:

  • STEM Scholars: Financial support for 30,000 undergraduate students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in public universities and technical institutions.

  • Technical Scholars: Assistance for 5,000 students yearly in public technical and vocational schools, covering tools, materials, and essential learning resources.

  • MHF Dangote Secondary School Girls Scholarship: Named after Dangote’s daughters, this programme will support 20,000 public school girls annually from JSS to tertiary level, providing full funding, uniforms, books, and learning materials, with priority for states with high numbers of out-of-school girls.

  • Teacher Training: Annual training for 10,000 STEM teachers across all six geopolitical zones, with plans for expansion.

Dangote assured that the programme will be merit-based, fully transparent, digitally managed, and closely monitored. It will collaborate with national education and identity institutions such as NELFund, JAMB, NIMC, NUC, NBTE, and NECO to maintain accountability.

To guarantee sustainability, he revealed that 25% of his personal wealth has been formally committed to the foundation. The initiative also aligns with the Dangote Group’s Vision 2030, ensuring long-term investment in human capital development.

Dangote described the programme as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, noting that keeping children in school strengthens the economy, reduces inequality, and builds future leaders.

A distinguished steering committee has been established to oversee the programme’s implementation, ensuring transparency and measurable impact. He also acknowledged the role of government, communities, and private-sector partners in improving Nigeria’s education system.

The ₦100 billion per year commitment is considered one of Nigeria’s largest private-sector-led education investments, with the potential to reshape the nation’s educational landscape and give hope to millions of aspiring learners.
